What makes us the perfect choice for your self-catering holiday?

Battisborough House is the ideal venue for a good old-fashioned holiday by the sea, no matter what the season. Situated in the peaceful countryside with lots of privacy. The House is set up to withstand the rough and tumble of our active guests. There’s so much to do at the house, within the grounds or down on the beach, that you will hardly need your car. Open throughout the year, it’s fantastic for a large house party of friends, to celebrate big birthdays or to enjoy family gatherings and reunions. With space for up to 2 well-behaved dogs who know that a venture upstairs or a snooze on the sofa is against the house rules!

You arrive at the house through the entrance pillars and down a tree-lined driveway. There is parking for at least eight to ten cars. With a variety of room choices – double, twin, or dormitory-style. We can accommodate up to 24-30 guests. All beds are made up according to your sleeping plan, and towels are provided.

Our facilities include more than ample bath/shower rooms, a farmhouse kitchen, a big dining room, a large sitting room, and an additional snug. We even have a dedicated drying room for wetsuits and coats. Outside, you’ll find a BBQ, sports equipment, a campfire area, a tennis/basketball court, a playing field, a flower meadow, woods and private beach access. Get ready for adventure!

A gem of a location

Enjoyed a fabulous week with family and friends at Battisborough House.  An ideal set-up, stunning setting with a huge amount to see and do.  Highly recommend the Surfing Cow ice cream from the farm next door, as well as the walk over to Mothecombe Beach and a pub lunch in Noss Mayo.  A gem of… Read more “A gem of a location”

Summer House Party

The perfect venue for my birthday party

Battisborough House provided the perfect venue for my birthday party, one I won’t forget! The numbers for the evening grew beyond the capacity of the house so I was able to use Hatch Marquees to put a marquee on the driveway. We were able to sit down to eat and then clear the decks for… Read more “The perfect venue for my birthday party”

Ground floor facilities

The property comprises an oak-panelled hallway (from an entrance hall) leading to a large reception room, kitchen, dining room, snug, stairway and farmhouse kitchen.

Back from the beach

There's a big boot room to dump muddy boots and coats or beach kit. Damp coats and wetsuits can be left in the drying room for the next day. The downstairs showers are ideal for washing off the beach.

Reception rooms

The impressive oak-panelled hallway leads to a large reception room with 3 large sofas and enough comfortable chairs for family  or a group of friends to chill out and enjoy the evening. Games such as chess, monopoly, articulate and many more are available.

There is a separate snug to escape to with a good book.

The kitchen

The spacious farmhouse style kitchen has a large four-door aga which provides the main source of cooking and keeps the kitchen beautifully warm. There are two large electric ovens, a microwave and an industrial dishwasher (detergent provided). A big farmhouse table provides working space and seating within the kitchen.

There is plenty of crockery, cutlery, utensils, pots, pans, mugs and tumbler glasses for a family house party. You can self-cater or engage a chef for your catering.

Utility room

There is a washing machine and dryer in a utility room next door and additional refrigeration and freezer space in an outdoor corridor which also leads to four showers and downstairs toilets.

Things to do

No need for your cars there's so much to do in the extensive grounds around the house or down on Mothecombe Beach and the River Erme.

At the House

There are endless opportunities at Battisborough House, here are a few examples:-

  • Cook outdoors: either on the BBQ or in our campfire area where children can enjoy den-building whilst the adults get the fire going
  • Group fun: book an organised activity at the house such as archery, or pistol/rifle shooting. Hold matches between friends football pitch, tennis/netball/volleyball court. Or use the grass for a friendly game of cricket, rounders. Set up relay races or your own Olympics for team events.
  • Enjoy nature: mark the changes in tides, flower pressing, kite making, daisy chains, bark rubbing, fairy dens, weaving a bird’s nest and bird watching.
  • Equipment-free outdoor games: tag, red rover, hide and seek, Simon says, what's the time Mr Wolf? Duck Duck Goose! Red light, green light, statues, follow my leader, blind man's bluff, wheelbarrow races, leapfrog
  • Indoor ideas for wet days: lotto/bingo, murder mystery, talent evenings, cards, movie nights, quiz nights, wink murder, sardines, the chocolate game
  • Visiting a working farm (seasonal) and tasting the locally made Surfing cow ice cream

On the beach

There's so much to entertain the younger members of the group besides enjoying a dip in the sea, here are some ideas:

  • How many different things can you find within the hula hoop?
  • Rock pooling at low tide
  • Beachcombing and games with bottles/ driftwood etc
  • Sieving for Flotsam and jetsam
  • Scavenger hunting or creating sand art
  • Damming and diverting the stream, making a boat to race
  • Playing games such as rounders, cricket, tag or inventing target games
  • Exploring tidal zones of the beach
  • Making a tide clock

Where an activity requires licenced instructors we use Reach Outdoors which is registered with the Adventure Activity Licencing Authority (AALA) providing qualified instructors for adventure activities and outdoor education. They cater for a wide variety of clients and groups including corporate events, stag & hen,  birthday parties, family days, and everything in between.

Sports and beach equipment

Basic football, cricket, volleyball and tennis equipment is available. A backpack with buckets and spades is taken to the beach for rock pooling or building.

Fun things to do locally and further afield
